Travel to Phong Nha from Hanoi or Hue

How to Travel to Phong Nha from Hanoi

Travel to Phong Nha from Hue

All buses are becoming increasingly popular with most companies now stopping directly in Phong Nha (rather than 45 km away in Dong Hoi). If you are heading down from Hanoi you will arrive at around 6:00 AM giving you enough time for breakfast before the start of your trekking adventure. Most buses also depart around 9:00 PM giving you enough time after your tour to relax and enjoy dinner in one of the local restaurants before taking off. Buses connect Phong Nha with Hanoi, Ninh Binh, Hue, Da Nang and Hoi An.

HANOI TO/FROM PHONG NHA
It is relatively easy to reach Phong Nha from Hanoi and vice versa with a number of transport options including train, bus and of course by flight. Most bus companies will now stop directly in Phong Nha, and taking a bus is therefore becoming a popular choice amongst travellers as it saves on the additional transfer required from Dong Hoi (closest train station and airport to Phong Nha).

HUE TO/FROM PHONG NHA
Hue is located just a few hours drive from the jungle and caving capital of Vietnam. It is a relatively convenient route with trains and buses of offer from a number of companies, as well as it being a short drive by private transfer if you preferred.

DA NANG (HOI AN) TO/FROM PHONG NHA
Da Nang is the biggest city in central Vietnam with beautiful beaches, mountains and a 45 mins drive from the UNESCO world-heritage town of Hoi An. It is a 7 hour train/bus journey between Da Nang and Phong Nha.

HO CHI MINH CITY TO PHONG NHA
Ho Chi Minh City, also still known by its former name of Saigon, is the biggest city in Vietnam. It is a focal point for those looking to see highlights such as the Mekong Delta, and it’s also a hub for international travel.

The only practical way to journey between Ho Chi Minh City (HCMC) and Phong Nha is to take a flight with Vietnam Airlines (or from February, Jetstar Pacific Airlines) to Dong Hoi City (located 45 mins drive from Phong Nha). The tickets cost between $80 and $120 each way and please note the flights are not daily.

The bus and train journeys are both just too long to be viable options for those wanting to get quickly between the two cities. Alternatively, for those on a budget but who have a little bit more time, it’s common to find that the cheapest flights are often available between HCMC and Da Nang or Hue (versus direct to Dong Hoi). From Da Nang or Hue, one can find a train to get to Dong Hoi, or even a bus to Phong Nha directly.

Phong Nha Travel Guide

Travel Guide in Phong Nha Ke Bang National Park

Phong Nha-Ke Bang is a National Park and a UNESCO World Heritage Site in Quảng Bình Province, in the north of the Central Coast region of Vietnam. The park is 40 km north of Dong Hoi, around 500 km south of Hanoi.

Phong Nha town is on the edge of the park just off the main highway, and has undergone some growth since the caves were discovered. Most accommodation, restaurants and travel providers are in the town, although there are some good places in the surrounding villages – where the trade off is the peace and quiet!

Situated roughly 45km to the northwest of the provincial capital of Dong Hoi, the limestone massifs surrounding Phong Nha are similar to those seen on the Andaman coast of Thailand and central Laos around Vang Vieng and Vieng Xai and mark the stark change in the geology of Vietnam as you pass from south to north.

The original “discovery” of the cave system within Phong Nha park is credited to a Frenchman in the late nineteenth century, but it wasn’t until 1990 that the magnificent Phong Nha cave was surveyed by a team of British and Vietnamese cavers. Then in 1992 came the title of the world’s longest river cave with a length of 7.729km and the first 600 metres of the cave was opened up for public viewing.

Subsequently came the “discovery” of Son Doong — most recently in 1991 by a local villager named Mr Ho Khanh and this cave, the largest “yet” to be discovered, surveyed in 2009 and which was first opened to tourists in 2013 paying an extremely hefty fee to be the first through. Overall only 220 visitors are allowed into the cave system per year. The cave is recognised as the largest in the world and houses enormous stalagmites of up to 80m in height and fossils believed to be over 300 million years old.

As far as Phong Nha is concerned, the caverns that are open to tourists are quite close to the mouth of the cave. Just as you enter, to the right, the boat puts out on a landing giving on to a set of stairs that leads to two caverns, or grottos. At 400 million years of age, these are some of the oldest limestone formations in the world.

If you’re one who considers caves to be nothing more than a hole in the ground, you have to see these caves to realise just how mistaken you are. There are caves, there are big caves and there are gigantic, world record-breaking caves. You’ll find some of the Planet Earth’s best of the latter category around Phong Nha. If you’ve only got time for one cave in your holidays — or your life — make it one of these.

Phong Nha town is located along the main road from highway 14, stretching 2 km to the boat landing for the caves. Thanks to a semi-recent surge in tourism, accommodation is generally good and not too expensive for an area as remote as this. While you’ll find typical Vietnamese style hotels lining the highway through town, a fair few homestays and backpacker dorms are settled in the more peaceful and picturesque countryside and are also on the table. These tend to offer a better nights sleep and on-your-doorstep adventure, rather than the former. So skip the town hotels!

Also, while it may be tempting to think “one cave, one night” Phong Nha really deserves at least a few days if you’re really planning on getting the most out of the area’s sights and surroundings.

In October and November the Phong Nha area can see heavy flooding due to a combination of being on low ground and typhoon season and while the rainy season actually runs from October through to February, October and November are the worst time to visit and some accommodation may well be closed at this time of year — so check beforehand. The best time to visit Phong Nha is in March and April — between May and September is can be extremely hot so March and April is the sweet spot.

Orientation
A new ATM (the town’s only one) is located in the centre on Phong Nha. The post office is located across the street from the Saigon-Phongnha hotel near the boat landing at the end of town. Internet is freely available at most guesthouses, although reception can be spotty and frustratingly slow.

Cave of Eight Voluntary Youths

Eight ladies cave or Tam Co cave (the Eight Voluntary Youths cave) is located at km16+500 on the Road No.20 which is part of the legendary Truong Son trail, the cave also bore witness to the sacrifices of the force of volunteer youth during the fight against the American, especially the eight volunteers  of the age of 20 years (a native of Hoang Hoa district, Thanh Hoa province) whose sacrifices became the symbolic of patriotism.

EIGHT LADY CAVE

During the American War, the area was a target of fierce aerial bombardments of the American to stop the northern reinforcement to the southern front-line and marked the terrible bloodshed of the volunteer youth during their attempt to keep the transport route clear. On November 14, 1972, violent bomb attacks were frenziedly dropped down to the land, a huge stone of 1000 tons collapsed to lock 8 voluntary youths inside the cave. Nine days after that, there was no hope for saving their comrades, all 8 voluntary youths sacrificed.

Today, “Tam Co” cave (Eight Lady cave) has become a spiritual tourism destination for travelers.

The sacred ‘Hang Tám Cô’ (The Cave of Eight Ladies) is a popular stop for those traveling on Road 20 in the central province of Quang Binh. Drivers often drop by to light incense for the souls of eight young pioneers of the Vietnam People’s Army.

The women starved to death in 1972 in a rock cave when they were hiding from U.S. raids.

U.S. bombs caused an immense rock to fall over the only exit of the cave that the women were hiding in. Great efforts to rescue the women were in vain.

Soldiers stationed nearby recalled that they heard cries for help resounding from within the cave.

The voices were steadily weaker day after day and stopped after the ninth day.

A journey to the cave

Construction of the 6m-wide Road 20 was completed this year. It facilitates transport to the historic cave and traffic from Quang Binh to neighboring Laos.

Last year when the road was half finished, it took a motorbike rider around 12 hours to traverse a section of 40km to visit the cave.

Leaving the Truong Son highway at the crossroads of Tra Ang, a Tuoi Tre team rode on Route 20 to the cave, located almost at the end of the road.

Rays of sunlight and songs of birds filled the air under a thick cover of trees.

A temple was built at the cave in 2006 to worship the dead, including the eight young women who had died in the rock cave and 500 other soldiers.

Tran Anh Tuyen, 33, one of the eight guides of the temple, said, “There have been many coincidences in the area that have to do with the number eight, including a banana tree that produces a bunch of bananas with eight clusters, and a gecko that delivered eight eggs sticking closely to one another in a corner of the temple.”

Electricity has not yet reached the area. Just last November, the mobile network operator Viettel transmitted mobile phone signals there.

Regular commuters on Route 20 are local villagers, teachers assigned to the villages, and border soldiers. Sometimes, tourists, explorers, and young people on camping trips also visit the spot to offer incense to the dead.

Locked to death

The tragedy involving the eight women occurred on November 14, 1972 when U.S. fighters dropped bomb after bomb on the 16km milestone as on previous days.

Eight women aged 18-20, who hailed from the central province of Thanh Hoa to repair roads in the area, had to shelter themselves in a rock cave.

After a series of bombs were dropped on the area, a colossal rock fell and completely closed off the only mouth of the cave.

Screams for help were heard. Three caterpillars were sent to pull the rock aside, but the efforts were fruitless. Blowing up the rock was a possibility, but it would certainly have killed the women inside the cave.

Rescue soldiers outside passed a plastic pipe through slots of the rock cave into which they poured soup and water, although they were not sure if it ever reached the girls.

Screams of help stopped on the ninth day.

In 1996, the remains of the eight women were taken out of the cave for official burial.

Xuan Son Ferry in Quang Binh Province, Vietnam

Xuan Son Ferry

Son Trach, Quang Binh Province, VietnamXuan Son Ferry

Retaining a particularly important position in the war against American imperialists, Xuan Son Ferry has become legendary in the history of Vietnamese people. It witnessed the heroic feats of Vietnam soldiers and war crimes of American imperialism.

Xuan Son Ferry is situated in Son River, Son Trach Commune, Bo Trach District, Quang Binh Province. It is one of the important and typical relics in the system of Truong Son road monuments throughout Quang Binh province. This is the wonder formed by intelligence, creativity and courage of soldiers together with blood of Vietnamese soldiers. They have sacrificed for vital transportation routes and the sibling South Vietnam. Undergoing 40 years, the scenery and the ferry have been still here and idyllic Son River has filled with unforgettable memories. Not only is it the special national heritage, Xuan Son Ferry also contains the large number of historical myths that tourists have not discovered yet. Along with Phong Nha – Ke Bang, Xuan Son Ferry is one of the fascinating tourist attractions in Quang Binh province.

As one of the tourist sites in the complex of Phong Nha – Ke Bang travel, Xuan Son Ferry was formerly the horizontal wharf serving the locals across the river. Yet the advent of the 20 Quyet Thang Road gave birth to the historic ferry. Xuan Son Ferry is responsible for putting the people and vehicles over the river and ensures the relief from 12 Road and 15 Road in the combination with 20 Quyet Thang Road. Initially, the military units use 18-ton ferry of Quang Binh Transportation Company with the main task of manually pulling ferry in order to connect two ferry terminals each other, namely Xuan Son – Phong Nha. However, due to the increasingly urgent requirements and task, Xuan Son ferry has gradually displayed its important changes to fit the new situation.

Having recognizing Xuan Son Ferry on Highway 15A retaining important strategic position, the US military had focused on raiding incredibly fiercely whole day and night. The Company of Xuan Son Ferry was initially formed only with 30 members, yet this number later had increased up to 150 soldiers. Forces were mostly infantry soldiers and youth volunteers with the means including canoes and pontoon bridges, mainly operating from 7pm to 4am. In daytime, soldiers avoided aircrafts of enemy, dismantling the ferry in order that canoes pulled it into Phong Nha Cave. Weapons and ammunitions were also gathered to keep inside the cave. Vietnamese soldiers here had extremely bravely fought to protect the key route. Discovering the heroic history of Xuan Son Ferry is definitely one of the most unforgettable things to do in Quang Binh.

In order to timely serving for the battlefield in the South Vietnam, B Ferry was born (also known as Nguyen Van Troi Ferry – far about 4 km from A Ferry – Xuan Son Ferry to the upstream of Son River and far about 800m from the mouth of Phong Nha Cave) in collaboration with A Ferry putting the cars and people across the river. Simultaneously, transport was also enhanced as a ferry, canoes and especially buoys mounting the bridges. American Air Force sought to destroy A and B ferries. In particular, at Nguyen Van Troi Ferry, American troops also released the great number of torpedoes and dangerous ticking bombs. There were numerous soldiers bravely sacrificing on the river to become the witness of war crimes that Vietnamese people had experienced.

Discover “Underground Royal Palace” in Quang Binh

Deserving to be “the kingdom of caves”, Quang Binh is outstanding on the curve of S-shaped road with giant and mysterious caves, and theirs wordless fairy beauty.

Coming back to Quang Binh at the end of August, I and my companion had chance to discover Palace Cave – where we visited two years ago and promised to come back a certain day – at least once in our life.

Discover Underground Royal Palace in Quang Binh (1)

Son River runs gently around 20 Quyet Thang Road.

Departing in the early morning, our bus went along legendary Truong Son trail, the life-line trail running through Quang Binh area became red mark of country’s magnanimous and glorious periods. This was strategic logistic system which provided support to the National Front for the Liberation of South Vietnam; the root of two branches: East Truong Son Trail and West Truong Son Trail. A corner, Ta Le river path, Da Deo Pass, Pula Nhich mountain pass, Tra Ang pass, km20… were places which were seriously sabotaged with complete destructive purpose of the enemy, to prevent the support for Southern Vietnam, witnessing a lot of soldiers falling down forever.

Going on 20 Quyet Thang Road, I looked at green Son River going smoothly along peaceful Phong Nha villages. This road broke the only one trail, connecting West Truong Son to East Truong Son, taking victory active position in traffic – transportation field then it has name: 20 Quyet Thang Road. 123km-lengthed road was also opened and built by contribution of almost military officers, volunteer youths at the age of twenty.

West Truong Son with white–line painted, twists through Phong Nha – Ke Bang National Park. Two sides are green primitive forests with charming landscape. From the area with a board “Thien Duong Cave”, the bus had to go about 6km more, and passed through two ramps to reach the ticket selling area. During long vacations, traffic jams always happen; many people have to walk 6km to go to the entrance gate.

Visitors could choose two options: buying two-way electric car carrying to the ladder of the cave, or trekking. We decided to walk 2km on the trail among primitive forests, the clear sounds of birds and various kinds of flora, and then faced with the next challenge which was trekking 524 stone ladder steps to go to the cave door. This was difficult challenge. A lot people could not climb sitting and breathing hard on stone steps. Everyone passing encouraged them: “Fighting, almost get there”.

The scenery in the cave is magnificent as a place in another world

At the rest stop in front of the cave, you can feel a cold blast of air coming from the mouth of the cave, which actually is a small gap among stones with the size fitting a person.

Walking through the entrance gate of heaven, my first feeling is impressiveness.  Behind that hint door is a giant cool underworld with full of darkness, except colorful lights brightening fairy space. Lines of visitors stepped on wooden stairs with crumbling and disordering vestiges.

Going far inside, the space opened in front of our eyes, magnificently, mysteriously as an imperial palace from a strange planet in our Galaxy. The massive stalagmites are various in shape and size, some growing from underground majestically and strongly, some falling slightly covering around visitors like velvet curtain. Tourists are free to discover and imagine a heaven on the Earth.

Tourists wallow in a mysterious space.

Rocky Flora Garden Palace with stalagmite looks like Our Lady cuddling baby; Giao Tri Palace where King of Heaven discusses with trusted courtiers about national issues, surrounding by unicorn and phoenix statues…The most special place is Quang Han Palace, where stalagmites fall down like female fairy’s curtain or Quan Tien Palace with group of Amitabha Buddha. Lien Hoa Tower has special forms which are different depending on different sides of viewing or imagination. Actually, it has been created from water dropping irregularly.

Being amazed by the beauty of imperial palace, we forgot that we approached to the final place of the first 1km. All of us did not really want to leave here. The guide gave each person one torch putting on our heads, loosened the rope knotting the hint door, reminded us, then our team total 9 people including one tour guide, two German, two English, one Italian and us, two Vietnamese, moved gradually into the darkness, to explore 7km of  Palace Cave.
